Geothermal Services for Sustainable Living

Geothermal systems are some of the world’s most advanced heating and cooling systems in North America. These systems have been around for years, and the team at Green Building Solutions has been servicing and installing these systems here in Texas for almost two decades. With our expertise and access to some of the best manufacturers in the region, you will love your geothermal system from the get-go.

What is geothermal heating and cooling?

Geothermal is a simple concept, but one that has been proven to work great in a climate like we have in Texas. A basic geothermal system will include a ground loop that is filled with water or a refrigerant and a heat pump to cool or heat the building. The loops can either be buried horizontally or vertically and will use the Earth’s internal heat to heat and cool the building. It is all based on energy transfer, so in the winter, you use the Earth’s energy to warm the liquid in the loop, which then, in turn, can heat the air in the heat pump and move it throughout the building. While in the summer, the exact process is reversed, with the Earth removing the heat from the liquid and cooling it down.

Two Systems One Goal

Closed Loop vs. Open Loop

There are two general types of geothermal loops in terms of the liquid within the loop. Closed loops circulate a mixture of antifreeze and water through the buried pipe without exchanging the water in the process. The other option is an open-loop system that will pass the water through the heat pump and exchange it with fresh water. These systems do not have antifreeze or other additives and rely on the ability to exchange the water to keep the pipes from freezing. Generally, if you are on city water, you will opt for a closed loop, while those on well water can and normally do opt for an open loop.

Installation of a Geothermal system

When it comes time to install a geothermal system, GBS can help with every single step. We have been installing these systems for decades and can install your heat pump and ground loops as well as the Desuperheater, which creates hot water when the unit is running, limiting the need for a traditional hot water tank for most of the year. It is a super-efficient add-on that makes our geothermal systems even better.  If you are still on the fence, consider that your utility bills will drop significantly once the unit is operational, and with available federal and local tax rebates, a geothermal installation is actually affordable here in Texas.
